FOR AND AGAINST ESSAY (Option 1) - Paula Balagué

Speaking two languages has obvious practical benefits in an increasigly globalized world. However, there are disadvantages and advantages of being bilingual, because not all aspects are positive.

On the one hand, many people believe that an important advantage of being bilingual is to have more culture and learn new languages easily, because you already have more previous knowledge about the language. For example, a person who speaks Catalan and Spanish will find it easier to learn French, because it looks a lot like Catalan, and that is one of the two languages that person speaks.

One the other hand, other people, who are usually bilinguals, believe that when they speak two languages some words confuse them and make incorrect mixtures of the two languages, because they find it difficult sometimes to differentiate which word belongs to each language. For example, there are times when bilingual people want to translate a word into the other language they speak, and they confuse and invent that word, which doesn't really exist.

To conclude, giving my opinion as a bilingual person, I think there are more advantages of being able to speak two or more languages than of being able to speak one, because it gives you more knowledge and culture, instead, being able to speak only one makes it harder for you to learn new languages.
