FOR & AGAINST ESSAY
In our present society, almost everybody speaks at least two languages, the
one from their country and a foreign one. This may be very practical in many
ways, but there are also some disadvantages.
On the one hand, being bilingual gives you many opportunities. The more
languages you speak fluently more options of communication you have. This is
fundamental for travelling, business, finding a job and mostly to socialite,
since the society wants people qualified to, at least, have a normal
conversation with people that are not from the same country. Furthermore,
speaking another language facilitates knowing new people and new cultures, because
you can understand the situation and what they explain; something that may not
be possible knowing only one language.
On the other hand, even the ones
that speak fluently both languages can make huge mistakes due to the fact of
being bilingual. That is because people tend to mix up between them, like using
structures that are not correct, adding unnecessary words, confusing the name of
the same thing. This may seem a little bit absurd, but it could be prejudicial
if you are in the middle of an important exam or writing a report for work.
Personally, not only is being bilingual an essential key for our future
and opportunities, but also it is a way to learn more about each other and new
things. However, we have to be enough careful if we do not want to mess up our orthography
and grammar while talking or writing. To sum up, I believe that being bilingual
is far more beneficial for us that knowing only one language, despite some
inconveniences.
